How to Detect and Remove Macros from File Uploads in Node.js

Dangerous file upload security threats are often buried deep within the common file types we’re accustomed to accessing on a day-to-day basis. Macros represent one form of malicious code which can be easily embedded within documents such as .DOCX, .XSLX, .PPTX, and more. They’re designed to compromise a system from the inside out once that file is accessed by an internal (or external) user.

Blocking Macros requires in-depth content verification for each new file upload. Thankfully, the free-to-use Advanced Virus Scan API provided in this article provides a custom request parameter which can be set to identify and categorically disallow macros embedded within file uploads. All you need to do is set the allowMacros request parameter to “False”, and any files containing Macro information can then be prevented from moving forward in your upload process.
