How to Check RAR Archives for Malware and Other Threats in Node.js

Compressed archives like .RAR are often used to conceal malware and bypass weakly configured antivirus software. These archives can hold a wide range of threats, and we’ll need to perform an in-depth scan to identify malicious content.

Using the ready-to-run Node.js code examples provided below, we can call a free API that scans the compressed contents of .RAR files for viruses, malware, and other potentially threatening content. This scan will also check for unsafe extraction outcomes (e.g., large quantities of compressed data intended to crash an application).

To authorize our API calls, we’ll just need a free Cloudmersive API key. This will allow us to make up to 800 API calls per month with zero commitments.

We can begin structuring our API call by installing the SDK. We can run the following command to install via NPM install:

Finally, we can call the threat scanning function using the below code. We can set custom threat rules to crack down on invalid files, files containing macros, script files, and more:
